Adolfo Perez Esquivel LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF CHILE

Buenos Aires, August 2010.

Lord President of the Republic of Chile
Dr. Sebastian Piñera
S / D

In my consideration:
;
; I am writing to express once again my concern for the plight that come through the Mapuche brothers imprisoned in different jails of the Republic of Chile.
Throughout my walk, for some time and throughout our rich American continent, Abya Yala, I have seen on the one hand, wealth and power different native cultures, but on the other injustices that have to bear to defend their rights, their lands and natural resources. But honestly Mr. President, I can not stop to amaze me that Even today, after so long of democracy in their country, continue to implement a law that originated in the military dictatorship. The Terrorism Act, which condemns Mapuche brothers, as if they were rebels, when in fact they are only defending their rights.
I have hope, Mr. President, as you are starting a new management can reveer and recognize when a process is not performing properly, and justice could serve as transparent and arbitrary. In this regard there are reports indicating the opposite and that is why today Mapuche prisoners are conducting a hunger strike because it is the only resource they have to focus the attention or waiting for a change of attitude.

hope can you understand and deal with claims of these brothers Mapuche him to convey to you greetings of peace and goodwill.

LETTER OF SUPPORT TO THE DEMANDS OF POLITICAL PRISONERS ON HUNGER STRIKE MAPUCHE

Barcelona, \u200b\u200bAugust 18, 2010.

LORD
Sebastian Pinera Echenique
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHILE
THIS

Cc
Mr. Valentin Muxi
Honorary Consul of Chile in Barcelona.

In our consideration

the undersigned, groups, organizations, citizens from around the world, we are writing to express our protest and concern about health and living status of proceedings 32 Mapuche political prisoners, conducting a hunger strike, begun on July 12 in five Chilean prisons.

Most of these citizens are being tried by the Terrorism Act, enacted under the military dictatorship. We know that the application of the law is disproportionate to the crimes they are accused to trial. She allows the Chilean judiciary to imprison citizens for long periods of preventive detention, in addition to the use of faceless witnesses. The legitimate doubts about the authenticity of the statements of those witnesses in the case besides political processes are enhanced when you know that those who lend to testify thereby getting money from the prosecutor, the accused party.

In recent years, this law has been applied only Mapuche activists. This concerns us greatly, we can not but note that the law is enforced by the state in a discriminatory manner, against the Mapuche in particular. In addition, there is double trial detainees who are subject processed by the civilian and military justice in the same case. This amazing support, own the Chilean legal system but incompatible with basic democratic principles, it seems a cruelty intended to contain the protest by the Mapuche social intimidation.

We are aware of a series of documents prepared by human rights organizations, who report violations of the rights of the defense and, more generally, the human rights of Mapuche activists. We are very concerned about the present moment, both from the standpoint of human and political. We have information regarding the deteriorating health of the prisoners, who have extended their action to the government's insensitivity to address both your particular problem as the conflict with the Mapuche people.

Therefore we ask your government to immediately address the demands of political prisoners Mapuche are not applying the anti-terrorism law in their judgments, they were not tried by military courts, freedom to all (as) prisoners (as) political (as) Mapuche and to put an end to the militarization of territorial conflict areas Wallmapu. (País Mapuche)
appreciate your prompt action and response, Yours sincerely,
