The events of recent decades worldwide show that the claims of peoples, ethnic or national groups, far from being "things" the past are still present in current and future policy. In this sense in Latin America, from the 80's, so-called "indigenous peoples" burst onto the political stage with a variety of claims ranging from challenging the neoliberal economic model to transformation of the traditional nation-state.
For the Mapuche, addition to the immediate material demands, the movement has added a new ingredient: the struggle for collective political rights. These and other reasons have led the Chilean State to criminalize the Mapuche struggle, a strong police and judicial repression by the Homeland Security Act of State and, since 2000, the Terrorism Act. This repression has resulted in the militarization of the main Mapuche conflict zones, the murder of three young Mapuche continuous raids, dozens injured, hundreds of trial and imprisonment of dozens of Mapuche activists. In this context, since the July 12 date, 34 Mapuche political prisoners have launched a hunger strike to denounce their unfair legal situation as well as the systematic criminalization and repression of political and social demands of the Mapuche by Chilean state . Therefore, from the particular situation Mapuche we invite you to talk about the main factors and features, as well as on the impact it creates in modern democracies, the struggle for collective rights.
I hope !
