filmmaker Annemarie Jacir's Salt of this sea is a road movie and love story. The particularity of this debut feature of director Annemarie Jacir is that the country that run the two lovers is Palestine. "Earlier in the film, saw the Palestinians through the eyes of the Israelis, and this is changing thanks in part to the movies," says the director. The story chronicles the journey of Soraya (Suheir Hammad), a Palestinian who lives in New York and returns to his native country, and Emad (Salah Bakri), a fellow whose only desire is to escape from Palestine. Together they toured the Mediterranean coast drive from Ramallah to Haifa via Tel Aviv. "The landscape is a character in the story. Everywhere there are traces of recent history," says Jacir (Bethlehem, 1964), referring in particular to a point in the film where the actors come to the ravaged hometown Emad to the ground by the Israeli army.
